Admission to select colleges is becoming increasingly more difficult. With so many top students vying for so few collegiate slots, it is important to submit applications that literally leap off the page and capture the minds, hearts, and imaginations of admissions counselors.
This year, The Educational Advantage Students who enrolled in our Application Assistance Program will be attending such prestigious schools as Dartmouth, Northwestern, Penn, Vanderbilt, Boston College, Georgia Tech, Amherst, University of Virginia, MIT, Johns Hopkins, SMU, and Georgetown. Application Assistance is specifically designed to guide students as they shape their experiences and histories into artful, colorful, and exciting collegiate essays and applications. TEA is once again offering this program on a limited basis by inviting 30 stalwart students to join Phyllis's Pen Pushers, an elite group who, from July through January, will work hour upon hour writing, rewriting, refining, and enhancing their college essays and applications. Because of the enormity of this task, summer with its less demanding calendar is the best time to begin the process. To date, several students have enrolled in the Application Assistance Program and only 23 spots remain.
We begin by asking the question, "How, from among thousands of qualified applicants, will the admissions committees at selective colleges and universities choose their freshman classes of 2003?"
In order to capture the minds, hearts, and imaginations of these omnipotent folk, students must present beautifully crafted applications with essays that define and describe them. This is done by illustrating those unique characteristics, experiences, and interests that set them apart from other qualified applicants.
We at The Educational Advantage view the college application as a canvas upon which students can paint their personalities, talents, interests, and achievements. Using their personal statistics as outlines, we help them add colors from their individual palates to create brilliant portraits via their personal essays. Under our tutelage, pens become the brushes and words become the paint with which each applicant artfully crafts the sentences that add dimension, life, and energy to the otherwise flat numbers and letters that represent high school achievements.
Through the essays of recent TEA applicants, admissions counselors journeyed down a torrential swollen stream on a rubber raft, braved an Atlantic storm while clutching a yardarm of a tall ship, and made their way through the steaming, crowded streets of Pakistan. They gained entree into the magical, whimsical world of Dr. Seuss and there witnessed the deeds of a sophisticated cat in a top hat and met a tree who sacrificed itself for its friend. They visited with famous and infamous personalities: Picasso, Captain James Kirk of the U.S.S. Enterprise, General Robert E. Lee, Willie Wonka, Bugs Bunny. By offering glimpses into diaries replete with childhood memories of passing scribbled notes on tiny scraps of paper, of dealing with the pressures of entering high school, and of making new friends while struggling to keep in touch with old ones, our students delighted and amazed the oh so critical readers in whose hands and hearts their futures rested.
We truly believe that each child has a wonderful and unique story to tell. Whatever the medium, we are prepared to help each one create a unique work of art.
The results of the labors of last year's indefatigable group speak for themselves, a fact to which the following list of Educational Advantage students (listed with their college acceptances) can attest.
